Bethpage Black should be a stern test for some fireworks in the Ryder Cup, but how does the course fair for us mere mortals? We'll use the Explore Mode in Tangent to preview which holes may be tough and get familiar before the Ryder Cup later this week.

The Ryder Cup is headed to Bethpage Black, one of the most iconic and intimidating courses in the world. Known for its brutal length, punishing rough, and that famous warning sign on the first tee, Bethpage will provide the perfect stage for golf’s most intense team event.

Team USA and Team Europe will battle in front of raucous New York crowds, and every hole will matter. But what makes Bethpage Black such a fitting Ryder Cup venue? Let’s dive in — not just through history, but through Tangent Explore mode.
One of my favorite features in Tangent is Explore mode — the ability to preview a course through the lens of real shot data from golfers who’ve already played it. Instead of just looking at the scorecard, you see what matters: where players struggle, where they score, and how they navigate the beast that is Bethpage Black.
Here’s a look at how Tangent users have fared across this legendary track:

Your Round Setup has a quick summary of Community Stats at the top.
Not bad. Tough course if no one has broke 80. You could be the first and set the Tangent Course record!
We can open the course in Explore Mode to dive in and learn that the first hole is the hardest averaging 1.8 shots over par! With 11 attempts, there have been 7 double bogey or worse!
It’s a narrow fairway, with a big dogleg right. Strategy wise, the hole plays over a full stroke easier if you miss to the right rather than the left.

The difficulty might be ramped up by first tee nerves from playing the infamous Bethpage Black. Just imagine those nerves standing in front of thousands in the Ryder Cup!
The easiest hole is the par 3 3rd, averaging just 0.6 shots over par.
Par 3s tend to be easier for higher handicappers as you eliminate the need to hit driver. You only need one good shot to hit the green, unlike on par 4s and 5s.
The pros can play the hole at over 230 yards, but most of our users won’t be playing the tips, which also makes the hole play slightly easier as 60% of Tangent users were able to hit this green in regulation.

Together, these stats paint a story. Bethpage Black doesn’t just test your swing — it tests your strategy, your patience, and your ability to take your medicine when things go wrong.
The Ryder Cup isn’t just about birdies; it’s about avoiding disasters. At Bethpage Black, avoiding bogeys may be more important than chasing red numbers. Tangent’s Explore mode shows just how narrow the margins are. Expect the world’s best to lean on strategy as much as power to handle the pressure.
If you’re watching the Ryder Cup and thinking, “I want to take on Bethpage Black someday,” or if you’re heading to any course you’ve never played before — Tangent Explore mode is your secret weapon.
